The transport was complex and required a trauma-informed, thoughtful approach. Given the young person’s recent behaviour, particularly his history of assaulting staff and attempting to escape during previous movements, it was clear that special precautions were necessary to ensure his safety and the safety of those around him.
At UK Patient Care, we always prioritise both the physical and emotional well-being of the individuals we transport. Our highly trained staff, many with backgrounds in mental health and policing, are equipped to handle the most challenging situations with the utmost professionalism and care.
The Challenges of Transporting Vulnerable Young People
Transporting vulnerable young people is never a straightforward task. Many of these individuals have experienced significant trauma and have complex emotional and behavioural needs. For this particular transport, the young person had previously attempted to escape during two separate vehicle movements and had been involved in incidents where staff were physically assaulted. This made the transport especially challenging and required careful planning.
We take a holistic, trauma-informed approach when working with young people, which means we take into account their past experiences and current state of mind. In this case, the risk of self-harm, injury to staff, or further attempts at escape made it necessary to implement restraint equipment for the journey. While restraint on minors can be a sensitive issue, we carefully assess each situation and use such equipment only when it is absolutely necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone involved.
By using restraint equipment, our goal is always to reduce the risk of harm. We do so in a way that is respectful, and that minimises distress, ensuring the young person’s dignity is maintained throughout the transport process.
Trauma-Informed Practices
Our trauma-informed approach ensures that we don’t just focus on the behaviour of the young person, but also on understanding the underlying causes of that behaviour. Many of the young people we transport have experienced significant emotional and psychological trauma. By adopting a trauma-informed mindset, we are better able to approach each situation with compassion, patience, and understanding.
This means that throughout the transport, we work to create an environment in which the young person feels safe, heard, and respected. For this particular transport, we worked hard to engage with the young person, providing clear communication, reassurance, and support throughout the journey. The transport went smoothly, and despite the initial anxieties, the young person later reported feeling safe and secure throughout the process.
The Power of Purple: Creating a Non-Threatening Environment
One of the distinctive features of our approach is the uniform our staff wear: purple. This choice is not arbitrary. Research has shown that certain colours, especially dark or highly contrasting ones, can be triggering for individuals who have experienced trauma or distress. To help reduce anxiety and promote a sense of calm, our staff wear purple, a colour that is neutral and non-threatening, which we believe helps foster a sense of security.
The use of purple in our uniforms is part of a broader strategy to make the transport process as stress-free as possible. For young people who may be wary of authority figures or who have been exposed to situations that caused them distress, the subtlety of purple helps reduce any fear or resistance that might arise.

Advanced Vehicle Features: CCTV and Body-Worn Cameras (BWV)
Our secure, luxury vehicles are designed with the highest standards of safety and comfort in mind. Each vehicle is equipped with CCTV to ensure full visibility and to protect both the young person and the staff throughout the journey. The CCTV system allows us to monitor the transport at all times, giving us the ability to intervene quickly if the situation requires it.
Additionally, all of our staff wear body-worn cameras (BWV). These cameras provide an extra layer of accountability and transparency, ensuring that the actions of our staff are documented throughout the transport. This helps protect both the young person and our staff, ensuring that all actions are carried out professionally and ethically. It also acts as a valuable tool for training and reflection, allowing us to review situations and improve our practice.

Regular, Rigorous Staff Training
At UK Patient Care, we recognise that ongoing professional development is key to ensuring the highest standards of service. Our staff receive regular training, both theoretical and practical, to ensure they are equipped to handle even the most challenging situations. We operate our own training centre, where staff undergo comprehensive courses on trauma-informed care, de-escalation techniques, conflict resolution, and the safe use of restraint equipment.
Training at our centre is hands-on, allowing staff to practice real-world scenarios and work through exercises designed to test their responses to high-risk situations. By running these regular drills, we ensure that our team is always prepared, and that they are able to manage complex or potentially dangerous situations with the utmost professionalism and care.
Our staff’s backgrounds in mental health, policing, and social care make them uniquely qualified to provide the necessary support to young people in our care. We believe in empowering our team with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to de-escalate situations, and to offer appropriate, compassionate interventions when required.
