What Is a Mental Health First Aider?

experiencing poor mental health.
The role is not to diagnose, counsel or provide therapy. Instead, an MHFAider® learns how to:
Spot signs that someone may be struggling
Start a supportive conversation
Listen without judgement
Reassure the person
Encourage early access to professional help
Signpost to suitable support services
Understand boundaries and confidentiality

This makes the course especially valuable for organisations that want to create a clear and practical mental health support structure within the workplace.
Look after their own wellbeing while supporting others

What Learners Will Be Able To Do ?

By the end of the course, learners will have a clearer understanding of how to recognise when someone may be experiencing poor mental health and how to provide first-level support in a safe, appropriate and supportive way. The course helps learners build confidence in starting a conversation, using active listening and showing empathy, while also understanding the importance of language, stigma, boundaries and confidentiality.
Learners will also understand how to encourage someone to access professional help and other suitable sources of support. As part of the MHFAider® role, they will learn how to use the MHFAider Support App®, access ongoing support through MHFA England and practise self-care when supporting others.
