We always advise that handcuff refresher training should be conducted every 12 months. From our experience, skill deterioration is significant due to infrequent use and practice, even for instructors.
To combat this challenge, we’ve developed a video library that breaks down handcuff techniques for delegates and organisations we collaborate with, allowing them to refresh their skills and knowledge between formal training sessions. This can be incorporated into organisational training policies, with in-person annual refresher training supplemented by video-guided CPD sessions every 12 weeks.
To help prevent that skill fade we have put some handcuffing tips together for you.
Top Tips For Handcuffing
Tip 1. Stick to the original key.
Using aftermarket keys may seem like a convenient solution to the small size of original keys, but they often do not work as effectively. To avoid this issue, consider purchasing an extended key holder to maintain the quality and smooth functionality of the original key. Here is a link to Niton999 where you can purchase one:
Tip 2. Load the handcuffs.
Make sure the handcuffs are loaded and ready for application. This will increase speed of application and reduce the risk of injury.
Tip 3. Block the elbow before taking hold of the handcuffs.
Make sure you block the elbow before trying to take hold of the handcuffs. There is a small window before you take hold of the handcuffs where you could be elbowed.
Tip 4. Stop looking at the keyhole!
Once you have found the keyhole with your key, stop looking at it! Bring your attention back to the subject and the environment around you.
Tip 5. Apply the handcuffs at the correct application point.
The application point is the little finger side of the wrist just below God’s notch. Remember to touch and push as applying the handcuffs to reduce the risk of injury.
Tip 6: Familiarise yourself with the handcuffs.
During times of stress or fear, when your heart rate is elevated, you may struggle to use the handcuffs efficiently. By becoming comfortable with handling them and practicing beforehand, you can increase your likelihood of success when under pressure.
