Strengthening Staff Safety: Delivering Personal Safety and Breakaway Training to Healthcare Teams
This week, our trainers had the privilege of delivering Personal Safety and Breakaway Training to frontline teams from Practice Plus Group and Nimbuscare. Staff across both organisations work in fast-paced, high-pressure environments where effective communication, situational awareness, and safe decision-making are essential. The sessions helped equip teams with the confidence, clarity and practical skills required to manage challenging situations while maintaining safety for both staff and service users.

What the Training Involved

The programme was designed around the real demands faced by healthcare professionals, NHS partners, custody healthcare teams and community outreach workers. Key modules included:

  • First impressions and professional presence
  • Reading and responding to body language
  • Situational awareness and early risk recognition
  • Lone working and personal safety strategies
  • Evidence-based de-escalation skills
  • Understanding the law on reasonable force
  • Breakaway and disengagement techniques that are safe, proportionate and defensible
  • Conflict management methods for preventing escalation

Every session blended practical, hands-on work with scenario-based learning, allowing participants to practise techniques in a realistic and supportive environment. More about the course can be found on our Personal Safety and Breakaway Training Page

An Excellent Training Environment

The training took place at the Practice Plus Group site in Leeds, West Yorkshire and Nimbuscare HQ in York. The venues provided the right balance of space and facilities for both classroom learning and physical skills practice, helping delegates feel comfortable applying techniques safely and effectively. The environment contributed greatly to the success of the programme.

Feedback from Participants

The response from delegates was extremely positive, with many reporting increased confidence and a clearer understanding of how to manage risk in their roles. Some of the comments included:

“Great course, interactive and relevant.”

“Very fun, informative and interactive. Learnt a lot, thanks Andy!”

“Genuinely the most interesting course I have attended. Informative, entertaining and up to date”
