What Is Breakaway Training in Healthcare?
Breakaway training equips healthcare professionals with the skills and confidence to safely disengage from physical holds or grabs using techniques that are lawful, proportionate and clinically appropriate.
Within NHS settings, staff may encounter unpredictable situations involving heightened emotional distress, confusion or aggression. Our breakaway and disengagement training focuses on reducing risk, preventing escalation and enabling staff to create space and safety without causing harm.
Key learning outcomes include:
- Safe and effective disengagement techniques
- Protection of vulnerable joints and pressure points
- Punch awareness, scaping from wrist, clothing, hair and body holds
- Maintaining personal safety without escalating incidents
- Understanding reasonable and proportionate responses
- Dynamic risk assessment in fast-changing environments
- Recognising early warning signs of aggression
- Personal space awareness and positioning
- Verbal and non-verbal de-escalation strategies
- Post-incident reflection and reporting awareness
The emphasis is always on escape, reduce risk and create safety, in line with NHS guidance and best practice.
Realistic, Healthcare-Focused Training Delivery
Healthcare staff need practical solutions that work in real clinical environments. Our training is never generic.
We use realistic, role-specific scenarios drawn directly from NHS settings, ensuring delegates can immediately relate learning to their own roles. This approach builds confidence, competence and consistency across teams, helping staff feel prepared rather than overwhelmed when challenging situations arise.
Trusted by NHS Organisations – Over 30,000 Staff Trained
To date, UK Patient Care has trained more than 30,000 healthcare professionals through our Breakaway and Disengagement Training programmes.
Achieving consistent, positive feedback at this scale is something we are extremely proud of. It reflects not only the quality of our training delivery but also the strength of our long-standing partnerships with NHS organisations nationwide.
Supporting frontline staff with the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to enhance personal safety is a responsibility we take seriously and one that sits at the heart of everything we do.
