Search Training – Devon Partnership NHS Trust
This week, UK Patient Care was proud to deliver three full days of specialist search training with the Devon Partnership NHS Trust, upskilling their dedicated staff in effective, respectful, and trauma-informed search techniques.

Our sessions focused on equipping teams with the skills and confidence to conduct searches in a way that prioritises safety while protecting the dignity and wellbeing of service users. Searching is a vital part of maintaining safe mental health environments, but it is also a highly sensitive area that requires a careful, respectful approach.

Accredited Search Training for Mental Health Settings in the UK

At UK Patient Care, we are proud to offer nationally accredited search training courses specifically designed for mental health services.

Unlike generic search training, our programme has been built from the ground up to address the unique challenges faced by mental health professionals. This includes:

  • Balancing safety and therapeutic relationships
  • Minimising trauma triggers during searches
  • Navigating complex risk assessment processes
  • Complying with health and safety legislation and Care Quality Commission (CQC) requirements

Our training is interactive, practical, and packed with exercises and realistic scenarios, giving delegates the chance to learn through doing rather than just listening. This hands-on approach ensures that staff leave the course not only with theoretical knowledge but also with the confidence to apply what they have learned in real-world situations.

As a result, our programme is now being adopted by NHS Trusts across the UK, supporting staff to meet their legal obligations while fostering a safe, compassionate environment for everyone.

Why SPECIALIST Search Training is Crucial in Mental Health Services

Under UK Health and Safety legislation, NHS organisations and care providers have a legal duty of care to maintain safe environments for service users, staff, visitors, and contractors.

This duty includes preventing harm and managing risks, such as the presence of prohibited or dangerous items within secure or therapeutic settings.

For example:

  • The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 places a responsibility on employers to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of employees and others affected by their work.
  • The Care Quality Commission (CQC) requires providers to have clear, safe procedures for managing risks in care environments.
  • The NHS England Patient Safety Strategy highlights the need for proactive measures to prevent incidents.

Searching plays a vital role in meeting these obligations, helping teams identify and manage potential risks before harm occurs. However, if searches are not carried out correctly, they can:

  • Cause distress or trauma for service users
  • Damage trust and therapeutic relationships
  • Lead to complaints, safeguarding concerns, or even legal challenges

Our training ensures that searches are lawful, proportionate, and person-centred, helping organisations strike the right balance between safety and dignity.

great Results: Building Confidence and Competence

The feedback from the Devon Partnership NHS Trust has been fantastic. Staff reported feeling significantly more confident in their ability to carry out safe, effective, and respectful searches following the training.

“Very good course. Engaging, friendly and informative trainers.”

“Good content, knowledgeable and experienced trainers .”

“Really good and interesting course.”

These testimonials highlight the transformational impact our training has, not just on safety, but also on staff morale and patient experience.

Looking Ahead: Continuing Our Mission

We’re excited to return next month to continue working with the Devon Partnership NHS Trust as part of our mission to improve safety and confidence across the UK mental health sector.

Every session we deliver brings us closer to creating environments where service users feel safe, respected, and supported, and where staff have the tools and knowledge they need to succeed.

We offer train the trainer options as well as delivering directly to the end user.
