Supporting Frontline Teams in Mental Health Care
Mental health patient transfers can present unique challenges for ambulance personnel. Whether working alongside NHS mental health units, private healthcare providers, or police services, ambulance teams are often faced with unpredictable situations where de-escalation, safety, and trauma-informed care are crucial.
Our training focused on helping delegates understand why behaviours occur and how to respond safely and therapeutically, ensuring every decision made aligns with best practice, legislation, and ethical responsibility.
What Did the Course Cover?
The Mental Health Ambulance Training delivered to Sussex Ambulance staff included both theoretical and practical components across several key areas.
Understanding Causes of Behaviour
Delegates explored the underlying reasons for distressed or challenging behaviour — including environmental factors, trauma history, communication barriers, and unmet needs — helping staff respond with empathy and understanding.
Trauma-Informed Care
We reinforced the principles of trauma-informed practice, ensuring all patient interactions promote safety, trust, empowerment, and choice. Staff learned how to reduce triggers and prevent re-traumatisation during transport.
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
PBS approaches were introduced to help staff proactively prevent incidents through structured, person-centred planning and consistent communication techniques.
De-escalation Strategies
Delegates learned a range of verbal and non-verbal de-escalation techniques, focusing on tone, posture, distance, and language to calm situations before they escalate.
Restrictive Practices
We examined when and how restrictive interventions may be necessary, always framed within legal, ethical, and human rights-based frameworks such as:
- The Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended 2007)
- The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
- The Human Rights Act 1998
- The Mental Capacity Act 2005
- Section 3 (1) Criminal Law Act 1967
- Common Law – R v Griffiths1988
The emphasis was clear: restraint must only be used as a last resort, for the shortest duration possible, and in the least restrictive way to ensure safety.
Post-Incident Support
Delegates were taught the importance of post-incident reviews, staff welfare, and patient debriefing, reinforcing the role of reflective practice in maintaining wellbeing and accountability.
Searching Techniques
As part of UK Patient Care’s accredited Search Training for Mental Health Environments, the course covered safe and lawful search procedures to identify potential risks, contraband, or self-harm items — always balancing safety with dignity and respect.
Use of Restraint Equipment
Finally, delegates received hands-on training in the safe and appropriate use of restraint equipment, including approved medical and transport devices. Emphasis was placed on communication, teamwork, and risk assessment throughout.
How Was the Training Delivered?
The course was delivered through a blend of theory and practical scenario-based learning, allowing participants to:
- Discuss real-world case studies and legislative considerations
- Practise de-escalation in controlled, realistic environments
- Apply physical safety techniques using approved equipment
- Reflect on professional responsibilities and emotional resilience
By combining discussion, demonstration, and experiential learning, delegates not only gained knowledge but also built confidence and competence in applying it during live operations.
We also provided access to online training videos covering the content delivered, allowing delegates to complete structured CPD sessions and reinforce their learning between refresher courses.

Why Training is crucial
Mental health ambulance transfers involve a clear duty of care under the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) which places a legal responsibility on employers and employees to protect both patients and staff.
Failure to manage challenging behaviour appropriately can result in injury, trauma, or legal consequences. Effective training ensures:
- Reduced use of restraint and safer patient outcomes
- Compliance with CQC and HSE expectations
- Better staff morale and confidence under pressure
- Improved patient experience during transfers
This is not just about safety, it’s about professionalism, compassion, and compliance in a sector where every interaction matters.
