Personal Safety Training – Practice Plus Group
On Monday 29th September UK Patient Care proudly delivered the first in a new series of specialist personal safety & breakaway training courses for frontline staff at the Practice Plus Group in Hull. The day was a resounding success. Staff reported feeling more confident, more aware and better equipped to manage the challenges that can arise in high-pressure environments such as police custody settings and community outreach work.

Training for Frontline Professionals

Frontline roles in healthcare, community work, and custody environments are uniquely demanding. Staff are often faced with unpredictable or emotionally charged situations that can escalate without warning.

  • Personal safety training ensures that professionals can protect themselves without compromising the care they provide.
  • Breakaway and disengagement techniques provide safe, effective strategies to exit from grabs or holds.
  • Conflict management and de-escalation skills help staff to calm situations, maintain professionalism, and reduce the likelihood of physical confrontation.

By tailoring the training to the specific risks and responsibilities of staff at the Practice Plus Group, UK Patient Care delivered a course that was not just theoretical, but directly practical and relevant to their day-to-day work.

What the Training Covered

The programme was built around the real-world challenges faced by staff working in police custody suites and during outreach services in the community. It included:

  • First Impressions – establishing trust and authority through tone, professionalism, and approach.
  • Body Language Awareness – recognising the signals of escalating behaviour and using non-verbal communication to de-escalate.
  • Situational Awareness – spotting risks early and taking proactive steps to stay safe.
  • Lone Working Safety – strategies to remain secure while working independently in the community.
  • De-escalation Strategies – practical techniques to calm individuals and prevent conflict.
  • Self-Defence and the Law – understanding legislation around reasonable force and personal protection.
  • Breakaway & Disengagement Techniques – safe, legally compliant methods to disengage from physical confrontation.
  • Conflict Management Strategies – tools to resolve situations before they spiral into risk.

Each session was interactive, with practical exercises designed to build confidence and embed learning in real-world contexts.

We delivered the personal safety and breakaway training at the Practice Plus branch in Hull, East Yorkshire. It’s a fantastic venue, offering plenty of space for both the theory sessions and hands on practical exercises. The environment really supported the learning experience, giving staff the confidence to apply techniques safely and effectively.

Feedback from Staff

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Staff described the course as eye-opening, practical, and empowering. Many highlighted how much more equipped and prepared they felt to manage challenging behaviour and maintain their own safety while supporting vulnerable individuals.

One participant shared:

“This training has given me the tools I need to stay safe but also continue to provide care and support in difficult situations.”

“You can tell Andy really enjoys what he does – Informative and passionate.”
