Search Train the Trainer Success with University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust
Another successful course completed and another group of professionals better equipped to deliver safe, respectful and effective search practices within young person secure services.

We recently delivered our Search Train the Trainer course to six trainers from University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, supporting them to build confidence, develop practical skills and prepare to cascade high-quality training across their organisation.

The feedback from the day was outstanding. Participants left not only with new techniques, but with a deeper understanding of how search practices can be delivered in a way that prioritises dignity, reduces trauma and strengthens safety for both staff and young people.

Search Training in Young Person Secure Services

Searching is a critical component of safety within secure environments but how it is carried out makes all the difference.

For young people, particularly those within mental health or secure care settings, searches can be intrusive, distressing and potentially re-traumatising if not handled correctly. That’s why training must go beyond procedure, it must focus on people, communication and understanding behaviour.

Our approach ensures that staff are not just trained in what to do, but how and why to do it in a way that aligns with modern, trauma-informed care standards.

What Our Search Train the Trainer Course Covers

Our course is specifically designed for mental health and young person secure environments, combining legal knowledge, practical skills and trauma-informed approaches.

Key areas covered include:

Trauma-Informed Search Practice

We place a strong emphasis on understanding trauma and its impact on behaviour. Staff learn how past experiences can influence a young person’s response to being searched and how to adapt their approach to reduce distress and avoid escalation.

Legal Frameworks & Accountability

Participants explore the legal considerations surrounding search, including proportionality, necessity and justification. This ensures all practice is lawful, defensible and aligned with organisational policy.

Communication & De-escalation

Effective communication is at the heart of safe searching. We teach practical techniques to reduce anxiety, gain cooperation and maintain professionalism.

Dynamic Risk Assessment

Staff are trained to continually assess risk, adapting their approach based on the individual, the environment and presenting behaviours.

Practical Search Techniques

We provide clear, structured methods for conducting searches safely and respectfully, ensuring consistency across teams.

Delivering Training to Others

As a Train the Trainer course, we also focus on how to effectively teach and cascade learning, giving participants the tools to confidently deliver this training within their own services.

A Trauma-Informed Approach That Makes a Difference

At UK Patient Care, we specialise in trauma-informed training within mental health and secure environments.

This means:

  • Prioritising dignity, respect and communication
  • Reducing the need for restrictive practices
  • Supporting staff to understand behaviour, not just manage it
  • Creating safer, more therapeutic environments

Our training aligns closely with principles set out by the Restraint Reduction Network, reinforcing our commitment to reducing restrictive interventions wherever possible.

We received amazing feedback from the delegates.
